Whether you are experiencing hair thinning that is related to hormonal changes or aging, or you’ve always had naturally thin or fine hair, it can be tricky finding a style that makes the most of what you have. Super long hair may prove too severe for thin hair, it’s true. And a flat, one-layer cut with a single-process hair color (especially if it’s a dark shade) isn’t going to do your locks justice. There are even specific hair colors stylists specifically advise against because they age you instantly! But, according to Celebrity Hair Stylist Adel Chabbi, owner of Adel Atelier Salon in New York City, there are two haircuts that work wonders on thin hair–and they’re a lot trendier than you might think.

The bob is a classic hairstyle that's always a great option for women over 40. It's a tried and true hairstyle that stylists agree is anti-aging. This haircut can work with so many different hair textures, colors, and women's styles.

What makes this timeless cut so great? For one, the cut is face-framing, which is a must-have feature for any woman who wants to look younger or slimmer in the face (check out these contouring tips that shave years off your face!). By framing the face, you then elongate your face. So if you notice your face filling out this is a great way to make your face look younger and angular rather than rounder. Luckily, there are so many ways to wear a bob, so no matter what your personal style preferences are, you're sure to be able to rock this cut. Sounds perfect!

Layered bob

Even with insufficient hair thickness and density, it's totally possible to create an effortless, stylish look, Chabbi says — but the key to success lies in finding the perfect haircut for your hair type.

"A slightly angled bob with clean-cut layers that can create that extra OOMPH for a woman with thin hair doesn't grow as fast is versatile, and is easy to manage," Chabbi says. "Also, a modern, long-layered shag cut works well for the woman who has long, thin hair because it adds texture for plenty of movement and body." A volumizing spray can go a long way when it comes to thinning hair!

In addition to playing with texture, color is also your best friend, Chabbi reminds us. Go for a great haircut with plenty of movement, but don't forget to speak to a colorist about ways you can incorporate subtle highlights or balayage into your hair to make it look worlds thicker.

A new haircut is bound to boost your confidence and make you feel more comfortable with your natural, beautiful fine hair. And, if you're still suffering from thinning hair don't worry! There are plenty of helpful tips for hair growth and styling you can adopt. For example, there are foods you can eat, serums, and scalp massages you can do to encourage thicker hair. And, you can even add fun accessories, like a scarf, to your wardrobe to hide any gaps in the hairline!
