The 2 Biggest Eyeshadow Mistakes That Can Make Eyes Look Smaller And Highlight Fine Lines

Eyeshadow is one of the most transformative tools in your makeup bag. It’s capable of sculpting, lifting, and illuminating the entire eye area, but technique is everything with this product. The right technique can open up your eyes, enhance the natural depth of your eye color, and even make your whole face appear brighter and more awake. Whether you prefer a soft wash of color or a super-smoky eye, eyeshadow has the power to create dimension and draw attention exactly where you want it.

But technique matters. Certain application mistakes can make eyes appear smaller, heavier, or more tired—sometimes emphasizing fine lines instead of softening them. If you already have small or hooded eyes, knowing what not to do is just as important as mastering the basics. Here are two of the biggest eyeshadow mistakes that can shrink the look of your eyes and draw attention to fine lines.

1. Covering the Entire Lid With Dark Color

While deeper shades can add drama and definition, applying a dark eyeshadow across the entire lid can actually make your eyes appear smaller and more closed off. Dark colors tend to recede visually, so when they take up the whole lid space—especially up to the crease or beyond—they can flatten instead of enhancing your eyes. This effect is even more pronounced on hooded or smaller eyes, where lid space is already limited. Instead of creating depth, too many dark colors can weigh the eyes down and make them look shadowed or tired. A better approach is to keep deeper tones concentrated on the outer corner of the eye or along the lash line. This helps maintain openness while still adding shape and contrast.

2. Not Strategically Placing Glitter

Glitter can be beautiful, but when it’s applied all over the lid without a plan, it tends to reflect light in ways that highlight texture, fine lines, and areas you might not want to emphasize. An allover wash of sparkle can scatter light and make the eye area look less smooth or defined. But shimmer and sparkle aren’t the enemy—they just need better placement. By adding a small touch of glitter to the center of your upper lid and a subtle dab along the middle of your lower lash line, you can catch the light in a way that draws focus directly to your eyes, making them look brighter, more awake, and highlighted rather than overwhelmed.
