Blake Shelton just revealed that his relationship with fiance Gwen Stefani began as a “rebound.” The two had originally been friends, and leaned on each other for support when they were each going through their respective divorces in 2015. It seems neither of them expected their relationship to grow as strong as it has.
The country singer recently opened up about his relationship with Stefani in a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. He spoke quite candidly in ways that surprised fans.
"I remember at that time we were just starting to see each other and we were both going through horrible breakups, divorces, horrible in that it was just sad,” Shelton said.
"And there were times where Gwen and I would be like, 'Are we rebounding here? Is that what we're doing together? Because this makes no sense.' And so we would always have these conversations like, 'Oh yeah, we're just getting over our crap with each other.'"
Shelton and Stefani first became friends in 2014 when they each appeared as coaches on season 7 on “The Voice.” At the time, Shelton was married to Miranda Lambert and Stefani was married to Gavin Rossdale.
Shelton had been married to Lambert for three years at this point, while Stefani had been with Rossdale for 13 years . Stefani and Rossdale share three children, now ages 15, 12 and 7.
Both split from their spouses in 2015, each saying that they had grown apart. Shelton and Lambert described their split in a statement: “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."
Similarly, Stefani and Rossdale had issued a statement at the time: "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment."
Shelton and Stefani got together very soon after their respective divorces. It seems that their friendship strengthened as they experienced similar difficulties at the time, and that relationship quickly grew into something more.
The couple have been together since 2015 and engaged since last year. They plan to get married this summer.
