A vital part of any effective anti-aging skincare routine is the daily use of products that work with one’s individual skin type, as well as items that support collagen production. Collagen is the main protein present in the human body, responsible for skin’s resilience and a glowing, supple complexion.

If your goal is to reduce wrinkles, blur fine lines, and elevate drooping skin, then peptide-infused serums, which stimulate collagen growth, are an essential item. We reached out to a professional dermatologist and skincare specialist to find out more about the potency of this active ingredient in anti-aging regimens. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Dr. Anna Chacon, MD, board-certified dermatologist and writer at My Psoriasis Team.

How Peptide Serums Boost Collagen Production & Restore Vibrancy

Peptides are the result of the amalgamation of several amino acids, Chacon says, and these proteins are crucial for the health of the skin. "Because collagen is composed of three polypeptide chains, introducing peptides can boost your skin's production of collagen," she explains.

She adds that peptide-containing products such as serums can help to reduce the visibility of wrinkles by delivering moisture and hydration to the skin. Dehydrated skin is prone to premature aging, so peptide-infused skincare aids in keeping your face healthy, supple and radiant.

Of course, in order to optimize your results, a nutritious diet and adequate hydration are essential, she stresses. "Peptide serums decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," she points out.

If you're new to peptide products in your anti-aging skincare routine, Chacon advises that you apply your serum directly after cleansing your skin and before you apply any moisturizers. "Use it after cleansing and before moisturizing," she recommends.

Other products like moisturizers and creams often contain peptides, and Chacon suggests not only using them, but also always "making sure the serum preceding it doesn't include a potentially irritating active ingredient if your skin is reacting."

For a beginner anti-aging skincare routine, Chacon advises incorporating several essentials in addition to any peptides products suggested by your dermatologist.

Cleanse your face each morning, she instructs, and then "use a vitamin C serum" to increase collagen production even more, and then apply moisturizer and sunscreen.

She notes that wearing sunscreen "every day, all year round" is crucial to prevent premature aging, faster wrinkling and sun damage. She deems this to be the "last step after skincare and before applying makeup."

The Bottom Line

Consulting with a dermatologist can be a great way to determine your skin type and find out the best skincare routine and products that are suited for it, Chacon concludes.

Additionally, utilizing peptide serums can be very beneficial to achieving anti-aging goals as they are the key elements for creating the proteins such as collagen and elastin that your skin needs!
