An Expert Reveals The 3 Common Hairstyling Mistakes That Make You Look Older After 50

You can walk out of the salon with the perfect cut—with layers placed just right and a shape tailored to your face—but if your day-to-day styling habits aren’t supporting it, that great haircut can fall flat fast. Even the best cut relies on how you handle your hair at home, and small mistakes can undo all that good work. From using too much heat without protection to skipping the right prep products, or even brushing and drying in ways that aren’t building volume, these common habits can leave hair looking dull, frizzy, or lifeless.

It’s not always obvious what’s going wrong, either. Overloading on product, neglecting your scalp, rough towel-drying, and using the wrong tools can all take a toll over time. The good news is that a few simple adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

One popular hairstylist on YouTube simplifies matters by warning of three common hairstyling mistakes that aren’t doing your hair any favors.

1. Not Using Hair Products Correctly

Using the wrong product—or using the right one the wrong way—can weigh hair down, leave it greasy, or make it look stiff and unnatural. A common mistake is applying too much product or putting it in the wrong area, like heavy creams at the roots or volumizers only on the ends. The fix is to match the product to your hair type and your goal, then apply it strategically: lightweight volumizers and mousses at the roots for lift, smoothing creams mid-length to ends for control, and always start with a small amount. You can always add more product later.

2. Not Blow Drying to Create Volume

Letting hair air-dry or blow drying without trying to create volume often leads to flat, lifeless results—especially at the crown where volume matters most. To fix this, focus on lifting the roots while blow drying: use a round brush or your fingers to pull hair upward, direct airflow at the roots, and consider flipping your head upside down for even more lift. Even a few minutes of targeted blow drying can drastically change the shape and fullness of your style.

3. Creating Too Much Volume on the Sides and Back and Not Enough on Top

When you build volume outward instead of upward, it can throw off the balance of your haircut, making hair look wider and less polished. This often happens when styling and blowdrying focuses on the sides and ends rather than the crown. The fix is to concentrate volume at your crown, while keeping the sides and back smoother and closer to the head. Use volumizing products and blow drying techniques, and avoid over-teasing or over-styling the sides so the overall shape feels lifted, not bulky.
