It’s not your imagination: the same eyeliner you faithfully applied for years can start to look “harsh” after some time. It’s all about getting the application method: applying with a heavy hand or using the same application technique that you’ve been rocking since your twenties doesn’t always work well when you’re in your forties, fifties, and beyond. A too-dark eyeliner, or a thick application, can make your eyes look smaller and more closed up.

According to Rose-Marie at RMS Beauty, a cat’s eye on mature eyes can look “harsh.” But, she says, “I like it when you do a line and you smoke it out and I call it a sexy smudge.”

Ready to master the “sexy smudge?” Here are Rose-Marie’s best eyeliner tips for mature eyes that “opens up the eye.”

Apply Color Close To The Lash Line

The first important application rule with eyeliner is to apply it as close to the upper lash line as you possibly can. If you leave space between the lash and your eyelid, the line itself can look harsh and too thick.

Smudge Away

Second step: grab something to smudge your liner and softly mute the color. There are a number of eyeliner pencils that are designed with smudge tips on one side and eyeliner on the other — these do a great job of softening the liner. You can also use a Q-Tip if your liner doesn’t come with a smudger. Subtly flick the ends at the outer corner of your eyes for a sexy, almond-shaped look, but don’t go overboard with an intense cat’s eye.

And that’s it: a few simple steps and seconds out of your day can make mature eyes look wide and sexy.
