Fast walkers in their 80s may have a striking advantage when it comes to brain health. A new study suggests that older adults who maintain unusually fast walking speeds have about half the risk of developing cognitive impairment compared with their slower-moving peers.
The findings, published in Neurology, add to growing evidence that physical function and brain health are closely connected. Researchers focused on a group they call “super movers”—people aged 80 and older whose walking speed was at least 1.5 standard deviations faster than the average for their age and sex.
These exceptionally mobile older adults appeared to experience slower cognitive aging, including slower declines in memory and other thinking abilities, as well as signs of better preservation in parts of the brain involved in memory.

What are “super movers”?
Walking speed is often viewed as a simple measure of physical function, but it can also reflect a broader picture of aging. People who walk quickly tend to have better strength, balance, cardiovascular health and overall physical function.
For this study, researchers defined super movers as adults at least 80 years old who had a gait speed substantially faster than expected for their age and sex.
The researchers analyzed data from three major research cohorts: five studies within the Health and Retirement Study International Network of Studies, the LonGenity Study and the Rush Memory and Aging Project.
Together, the studies allowed researchers to examine thousands of older adults and look at cognitive changes over time, brain structure and, in one group, dementia-related brain pathology.
About half the risk of cognitive impairment
The largest analysis included 3,989 adults with an average baseline age of roughly 84. After excluding people who already had cognitive impairment, researchers found that the 358 participants classified as super movers had a significantly lower risk of developing cognitive impairment during follow-up.
Their hazard ratio was 0.49, meaning their risk was approximately 51% lower than that of nonsuper movers. Follow-up periods ranged from about 3.4 to 5.4 years.
That does not mean walking quickly was proven to prevent dementia or that increasing walking speed will automatically cut an individual's risk in half. The study was retrospective and observational, so it can identify an association but cannot establish that faster walking itself caused the lower risk.
In other words, fast walking may be a marker of healthier aging rather than the sole reason some people maintain better cognitive health.
Their brains appeared to age more slowly, too
The researchers found additional clues in the LonGenity cohort, which included 197 adults with an average age of about 85.
Super movers showed slower declines in both memory and non-memory-related cognitive abilities after accounting for factors including age, sex, education and parental longevity.
Brain imaging also revealed differences. Super movers had better preservation of hippocampal volume in specific hippocampal subfields.
The hippocampus is a brain region critically involved in learning and memory and is particularly vulnerable to aging and Alzheimer's disease.
What about Alzheimer's pathology?
The researchers also examined 692 participants from the Rush Memory and Aging Project.
Super movers had better cognitive performance during life and lower prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. However, when researchers examined brain tissue after death, they did not find significant differences in dementia-related brain pathologies between super movers and nonsuper movers.
That finding is important because it suggests the relationship between exceptional mobility and cognitive health may be more complicated than simply having fewer Alzheimer's-related brain changes.
The ability to remain physically capable in very old age could reflect a combination of factors—including cardiovascular health, lifestyle, resilience, genetics and biological aging—that work together to protect cognitive function.
Could walking faster actually protect your brain?
The study cannot answer that question yet.
Because the research was observational, it is possible that people who are already healthier cognitively and physically are more capable of walking quickly. The researchers themselves emphasize that studying the behavioral and biological characteristics of super movers could help identify mechanisms that protect against cognitive decline.
Still, the findings fit with a substantial body of research connecting physical activity and cognitive health.
Walking is also one of the most accessible forms of exercise. For older adults who are medically able to do so, regular walking can contribute to cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance and independence.
But the goal shouldn't necessarily be to walk as fast as possible. A person's safe walking speed depends on their age, fitness, balance and medical conditions. A sudden change in walking ability—or new difficulty walking—can also be a reason to talk with a healthcare professional.

The bottom line
The researchers' “super movers” offer an intriguing picture of what healthy aging can look like: people in their 80s who remain unusually mobile may also maintain stronger cognitive abilities and healthier brain structures.
The most striking number is the 49% hazard ratio, corresponding to roughly half the risk of incident cognitive impairment. But the study should be viewed as evidence of an association, not proof that fast walking prevents cognitive decline.
For now, the message is simpler: maintaining physical mobility may be one important part of maintaining brain health as we age.
And walking—something many people can incorporate into daily life without specialized equipment—remains one of the simplest ways to stay moving.
