Beautiful skin starts from within. Of course, genetics and good skincare really help, but if you take those things out of the equation you are left with good habits and a diet that emphasizes fresh whole foods. If you’ve ever wondered what dermatologists think you should be eating more of to get the most radiant skin possible, SHEFinds went straight to the source. Mehmet Göker, Dermatology Specialist at Vera Clinic, says you should put these four foods on your plate every day for younger looking skin over 40.
Vegetables
“Vegetables are full of nutrients and low in calories and contain antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of heart disease, cataracts, and certain cancers,” Göker says. “Many vegetables are also rich in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in collagen production which is key for skin benefits. Some of the best vegetables you should incorporate into your diet include leafy greens, bell peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli.”
Avocados
“Avocados are nutrient-packed that are rich in monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, which help support a healthy skin membrane and prevent free radical damage that leads to aging,” Göker says.
Fatty Fish
“Fatty fish, also known as oily fish such as salmon and tuna are full of omega-3 fatty acids,” Göker says. “Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to a strong skin barrier. Many types of fish are high in protein, which is important to eat so your body can produce collagen and elastin and can improve overall skin health.”
Extra-virgin olive oil
Don’t buy into the myth that fat us bad droit you. In fact, Göker says, olive oil is one of the healthiest oils that will keep your skin looking younger. “Monounsaturated fats offered by the oil are associated with increased skin elasticity and firmness,” Göker says.
These four foods are easy to find and incorporate into a variety of recipes and can make a major difference in the condition of your skin.
