If you’ve reached a point in your life where your hair is making you feel worse, and not better, about your appearance, it may be time for a change. As we age, our hair naturally gets finer and often times thinner — and maybe even a bit more brittle with less shine and volume. Sounds scarier than it actually is — because we also have so many more hair care solutions these days that address aging hair and can make it look its best, no matter what our age.

Your hair doesn’t have to stop being your crowning glory just because it transforms over time — the key is to work with what you have and make the most of it at every stage. Here are five life-changing hair hacks that will make you look 10 years younger.

Cut Layers Into Your Hair

Across the board, this is one of the most popular hair tips for aging hair that you’ll encounter: If you are sporting one long layer of hair, its weight could be pulling your face down and giving you the illusion that you’re older than your age. The simple modification that can shed years is to ask your stylist to cut a moderate number of layers into your hair so that it better frames your face. Subtle layers (but not too many, which can make hair look thinner) also give your hair more bounce and freedom of movement.

Hot Rollers Give Limp Hair New Life

Achieving volume you have lost over the years is one of the easiest ways to make your hair and face look more youthful. Hot rollers seem intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of using them on large sections of your hair and realize it takes just minutes and that you can go about your morning routine (even if that means sipping coffee) while they work their magic, you’ll find yourself hooked. And you don’t have to use hot rollers just to create curls, either. The larger the roller and the larger the section of hair you roll, the more likely you’ll achieve gorgeous volume.

Add Highlights (Especially Around Your Face)

Even the most color-phobic among us benefit as we age from a contrast in color around our faces, something that can be easily achieved with balayage (if you prefer a natural, sun-kissed look) or a few foil highlights (if you’re a fan of precision).

"As we age, we lose definition in our face, and hair color can add that back in," Tippi Shorter, a member of the Pantene Relaxed and Natural Academy of Science and Style, told Marie Claire.

If you have extremely dark hair that’s all one shade, consider subtle face-framing highlights. Conversely, if your hair is extremely light and you feel it’s washing you out, a color expert can weave in lowlights to give your hair more dimension.

Consider Bangs

Botox not in your future? Cosmetic procedures are not for everyone, nor are they a necessity. But if you are unhappy with fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead, the fastest way to conceal them is to cut bangs into your hair. Be careful though: a blunt bang that hangs like a curtain in one layer can look too harsh. More texturized and softer bangs like the ones Penelope Cruz sports here are much more youthful.

batiste dry shampoo

Dry Shampoo Can Lift Your Roots

If you wake up and find yourself with flat hair, not enough time to wash it, and a long day ahead of you, consider dry shampoo your best hair friend. Spray a bit of the oil-drying and refreshing powder onto roots, allow it to settle for a second, and then brush your hair to remove residue.

And if you find yourself out of dry shampoo one day, simply open your pantry or medicine cabinet and compensate. Ingredients like cornstarch and baby powder can (when used sparingly) sap up excess sebum on your scalp and give your hair a healthy boost at the roots. Make sure you’re only using a bit of talc powder or cornstarch because a little goes a long way and a lot can leave a mess of white residue behind. The next time you shampoo your hair, incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your routine, one that will gently remove product buildup from your scalp and leave you with fresh, clean, shiny, and healthy hair.
