Heavy, Droopy Lids? Makeup Artists Share The Eyeliner Techniques That Create A More Lifted Look After 40

Heavy, droopy lids are often treated like a flaw to fight — something to camouflage, tighten, or hide. But the truth is, every distinctive facial feature comes with its own kind of beauty and its own set of techniques that can enhance it. Hooded or heavier lids simply require a different approach (not harsher critiques). With the right makeup, they can look sultry, expressive, and beautifully defined.

That’s where eyeliner becomes a game changer. When applied well and with skill, liner has the power to reshape, lift, and brighten the entire eye area — sometimes in just a few strokes. The right placement can create the illusion of openness and structure, and can elevate the face without looking overdone.

Here is one expert’s simple take for an  effective way to line heavy lids so your eyes, and entire face,  appear fresher and more lifted.

1. Start with your eyes open and relaxed

Look straight into the mirror so you can see exactly where the lid sits when your eyes are open. This will help you draw your liner where you'll actually see it, instead of having it disappear into the droopy or hooded fold when you blink. Begin lining your upper lash line from about the middle of the eye outward, keeping the line as close to the lashes as possible so it doesn’t weigh the lid down.

2. Angle the line upward toward the brow tail

Instead of following the natural droop of the lid, extend your liner slightly upward in the outer corner. This upward slant lifts the eye and creates the illusion of a more open, awake shape. Use small, controlled strokes and keep the line thin so the focus stays on eye lift and doesn't look too heavy.

3. Build a small wing and connect it back to the lash line

Once you’ve mapped the upward angle, draw a short, subtle wing and then connect it back to the liner on your upper lash line. This “lifted flick” elongates the eye and minimizes the appearance of droopiness. Finish with mascara to help enhance the open, lifted effect.
