Jennifer Lopez has come under fire in recent days after announcing that her new skincare line JLO Beauty will feature olive oil as its hero ingredient, which she claims is the secret to her ageless look. The 51-year-old mother of two shared a makeup-free selfie to Instagram where her skin looked positively radiant, but derms were skeptical after J Lo has been quoted saying “I haven’t ever had Botox to this day…I’m not that person.” Did olive oil really keep her wrinkles at bay?

Lopez is known for her ageless complexion, which was why fans were thrilled when the singer announced her new skincare brand JLO Beauty. But the star made some strange claims about her skincare secrets, divulging, “My mom used to say that olive oil was the cure-all for everything. And it’s a secret I’ve used over the years because it really does work. So, when we went to do this, that was the first thing I said: it has to have olive oil extract as a base.”

Dermatologists were vocal about their skepticism that olive oil was really behind her flawless complexion, sounding off on their takes. Dermatologist Dr. Corey Hartman took to Instagram, posting a meme of the Kardashian sisters staring straight faced at the camera with the text, “Dermatologists watching J Lo deny Botox and claim olive oil.” He captioned the image, “I think Jennifer Lopez is probably “forgetting” if she’s ever had Botox but I know for sure that she’s used more than olive oil to maintain that glow,” before going on to say, “To each his own. And good luck to J Lo with the olive oil. We don’t believe you but we still love you, Jenny.”

No shame if J Lo did ever get botox, but derms are frustrated that denial only furthers the stigma against it, leading to unattainable beauty standards that cannot be reached with olive oil. Dermatologist and author of “The Pro-Aging Playbook,” Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank posted the same meme, captioning his image, “Haven’t we gotten past the negative stereotype of doing little cosmetic things for ourselves like any other form of grooming! Doesn’t it seem more obnoxious when celebrities tell the world their DNA is just better than ours…” We’re not sure what to make of olive oil as a skincare secret, but we’re sure the doctors know best.

While J Lo may simply have a well-refined beauty routine that keeps her skin from showing a single wrinkle, dermatologists are having a hard time believing that olive oil is the sole cause of her ageless skin. All we can do is take her word at face value, but we’re weary of any skincare ingredient that isn’t backed by dermatologists, and it seems like olive oil is raising some eyebrows. At the end of the day, J Lo does seem to have some secret for flawless skin--even if she isn’t sharing the whole truth!
