Filmed inside her car while wearing oversized sunglasses and a dusty blue jacket, the mom of three opened the clip with the caption, “5 things I didn’t know our clothes can be made of,” before revealing five unexpected materials that could help reduce fashion’s environmental footprint.
The list included:
- Mushrooms, which grow quickly without requiring large amounts of land or water.
- Pineapple leaves, which can be repurposed into fabric instead of being burned as agricultural waste.
- Cactus, a low-water crop that can be turned into leather-like materials without harsh chemicals.
- Bacteria, which researchers are using to create fibers with a smaller environmental footprint than conventional textiles.
- Recycled fishing nets, which help remove plastic waste from oceans while being transformed into new materials.
The post comes as the Bezos Earth Fund announced $34M in grants to scientists developing next-generation sustainable fabrics and textile technologies.
Not everyone was impressed, however. Many Instagram users pointed to Sánchez and Jeff Bezos’ lavish lifestyle—including their frequent private jet travel and luxury spending—arguing that the sustainability message rang hollow.
“Ur husband is killing the planet sis,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “Lauren, can you convince Jeff to pioneer in using recycled water on data centers please?”
Others referenced the couple’s luxury fashion choices, writing, “Highly doubt your Dolce wedding dress and 80 corsets are made from cactus or bacteria.”
Additional comments included, “Can you use private jet emissions?” and “EXACTLY. STOP BUYING ALLIGATOR HERMES BAGS. CARE ABOUT ANIMALS!!!!!”
In another viral post discussing the initiative, many users shifted the conversation to Amazon’s environmental impact.
“That’s fine and all, but maybe they should start by reducing Amazon’s environmental footprint,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “This is really great…aaaaand I’m certain they aren’t doing this without financial incentive.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, writing, “Reduce Amazon’s environmental and social footprint pls,” while another added, “So he’s investing money to find a solution to the problem he contributed to. That’s called finding a new business opportunity.”

Lauren Sanchez Gets Involved In The Fashion Industry
Despite the criticism, Sánchez has increasingly positioned herself within the fashion world. She and the Amazon founder served as major sponsors of the 2026 Met Gala and its accompanying Costume Institute exhibition, and she has become a regular front-row guest at Paris Haute Couture Week, often wearing vintage couture from fashion houses including Dior and Schiaparelli.
Together, Sánchez and Bezos have also directed funding through the Bezos Earth Fund toward initiatives aimed at helping the fashion industry reduce its reliance on fossil fuel-based materials and accelerate the development of more sustainable textiles.
