Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to grabbing headlines – and akin to most A-listers, it’s for both positive and negative reasons.

The 51-year-old Oscar-winning actor has been widely praised for his acting career and environmental activism. But he’s also faced criticism over some eyebrow-raising moments, including holidaying on Jeff Bezos’ yacht despite aforementioned activism, and repeatedly dating women decades younger than himself.

Another thing he has raised eyebrows for is his tendency to wear baseball caps in public – not just when he is off-duty and running errands like many other celebs, but also to high-profile events. This has included a black-tie gala with girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, and even Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos‘ wedding in Italy this summer. But why does he do it?

Leonardo DiCaprio Reveals The Real Reason He Hides His Face In Public

Fans have often speculated why the Killers of the Flower Moon actor covers his face with a baseball cap at high-profile events, with some people thinking it's due to recovering from cosmetic surgery. But fans needn't speculate any longer, as he has just revealed the real reason!

In an interview with Time, to coincide with being named 'Time Entertainer of the Year,' the Wolf of Wall Street actor explained that it's essentially all about privacy and the desire to shield his identity in a world of constant cameras and flashing lights.

"It's been a balance I've been managing my whole adult life, and still I'm not an expert," the Don't Look Up actor said.

Leonardo DiCaprio Thinks Privacy Is The Secret To A Long Hollywood Career

According to the One Battle After Another actor, the desire to stay under the radar goes deeper than just dodging paparazzi – it's about career longevity too! He explained that he wants people to see him on screen, not during his everyday, non-working life.

"I think my simple philosophy is only get out there and do something when you have something to say, or you have something to show for it. Otherwise, just disappear as much as you possibly can," he told the pub.

He added: "I was like, 'Ok, how do I have a long career? Because I love what I do, and I feel like the best way to have a long career is to get out of people's face.'"

Leonardo DiCaprio Never Liked Media Attention That Wasn't 'About Acting'

The Revenant star's comments echo what he previously shared about fame following the explosive success of Titanic in an interview with Billboard back in 2016.

At the time, he reflected on how suddenly being one of the most famous people on the planet due to the success of the movie shifted his entire life away from his craft, which he saw as a problem. "My whole life became about things that weren't about acting," he said at the time.

The Great Gatsby alum also recalled how the film's success is something neither he nor co-star Kate Winslet could have predicted, which may explain why he has spent the years since its release fiercely protecting his privacy. "We did it, and it became something that we could've never foreseen," he confessed.

Leo went on: "We never predicted that it would be what it was, and I said, 'Okay, slow down. Let all this pass a little bit, and let's get back to…find something that…' I knew it was going to be an adjustment. I knew there was an expectation of me to do a certain thing at that point, and I knew I had to get back to what my intentions were from the onset."
