A McDonald’s customer was left disgusted after discovering a mysterious black substance on a chicken sandwich, prompting a wave of shocked reactions online.

A Reddit post recently went viral after a customer shared a photo of their McDonald’s chicken sandwich, which appeared to have a dark, ash-like substance covering part of the bun and patty.

The customer, who said the sandwich came from a McDonald’s location in Westerly, Rhode Island, captioned the post, “Nice surprise on my McDonald’s chicken sandwich! Never going to the Westerly RI mcdonalds again. How they let this out the door is beyond me. If this is what they are serving, i’d hate to see what’s back in the kitchen.”

The dark substance was clearly visible in the photo, leaving other Reddit users and McDonald’s customers horrified and wondering how the sandwich made it to a customer.

Reddit Users React

“They do toast their buns but that's definitely mold eww,” one person commented.

“Ya...I've never seen a burnt bun at McDonald's lol...but can't say I would not have bit into this. Great catch,” another Reddit user replied.

“Did you report this? This is naaaasty, like department of health and safety nasty,” another person wrote.

Someone else joked, “Someone put their cigarette out.”

“I would've been asking for free food for a year, that's completely unacceptable. A measly refund is a slap in the face for serving you a nasty patty,” another commenter said.

“Should've been a class action lawsuit tbh,” someone else claimed.

“Someone used your sandwich as an ashtray lol,” another person joked.

The original poster later returned to the thread with an update, confirming that the substance had been identified as mold.

“It's mold. They confirmed and refunded. Pretty gross,” the customer wrote.

The update only added to the disgust among commenters, with the post continuing to circulate as users reacted to the appearance of the sandwich and questioned how the food passed through the restaurant before reaching the customer.
