Prince Harry Recalls Meghan Markle's First Trooping The Color In 'Spare'
According to Prince Harry's account in Spare, the former Suits actress made an awkward joke during her first Trooping the Color appearance as a member of the royal family, at a time when tensions behind the scenes were allegedly already running high.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had married just one month earlier at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, and Harry suggested relations between Meghan and Kate remained strained following the reported and now infamous disagreement over Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress ahead of the wedding. We still to this day don't know what happened and who made who cry, but we don't think their relationship has been the same ever since!
For the occasion, Meghan wore a blush pink off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress, which raised eyebrows at the time as revealing her shoulders was seen as breaking royal sartorial protocol. Kate, meanwhile, opted for a pale blue Alexander McQueen ensemble, which she paired with a coordinating hat by milliner Juliette Botterill and a chic updo, sticking with royal dress codes.
Prince Harry Says Meghan Markle's Joke Was Met With A 'Yawning Silence'
According to Prince Harry's account in his memoir, everyone appeared to be enjoying the occasion despite the reported tensions that had allegedly been brewing behind the scenes in the months leading up to the event – until Meghan replied to Kate's seemingly innocent question.
"Everyone present was in a good mood, upbeat. But then: Kate asked Meg what she thought of her first Trooping the Color," Harry wrote in Spare. The Duke of Sussex said Meghan replied with a one-word joke: "Colorful."
"And a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole," Harry added, describing the uncomfortable reaction that followed.
