Melania Trump was absent from another major Republican Party gathering this week, skipping the GOP’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas. Her absence further fueled speculation that the couple are “living separate lives.”
The two-day Republican Midterm Convention took place September 9 and 10 at the American Airlines Center, with President Donald Trump being among the featured speakers. The event was being billed by the party as its first midterm convention and focused on promoting Republican candidates and the Trump administration’s agenda.
The first lady was not scheduled to attend the Dallas event. Instead, her spokesperson confirmed that she would remain in Washington, where she was scheduled to deliver remarks at a White House Historical Association reception.

Melania Trump Skips Republican Party Midterm Convention
Her absence is notable given the highly Trump-focused nature of the gathering, but it is consistent with Melania’s relatively limited participation in political events alongside her husband. She also had a limited role at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where she appeared only on the final night.
The latest absence also follows a period in which Melania has made fewer public appearances. She returned to the spotlight in July when she attended the FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium before appearing at a White House Rose Garden event in August.
During that August appearance, she acknowledged her absence from the public eye with a lighthearted remark to the crowd: “Good afternoon, I heard you missed me. Here I am.”
Reports have also previously described Donald and Melania as maintaining largely "separate lives" outside of official appearances. A PEOPLE source described the couple as having limited interaction beyond what is expected of them publicly, while another source said the mom of one “leads her own life and joins him when appropriate.”

According to that reporting, the former model spends time between different residences and generally keeps to herself when she is in Palm Beach, although she occasionally joins her husband for dinner.
The couple’s living arrangements have also received attention over the years, with biographers and former aides describing them as having separate bedrooms and distinct living spaces at some of their residences.
Still, Melania’s decision to skip the Dallas convention does not by itself establish anything about the state of her marriage or relationship with the president. Her office confirmed where she would be appearing instead, while her relatively selective public schedule has been a feature of her role as first lady.
