Michelle Obama and Barack Obama joined Joe Biden on his campaign trail last year and stepped back into the spotlight. With more eyes on them, the inevitable happened—fans starting noticing the little things. At the beginning of 2025, the divorce rumors hit, and they’ve been swirling ever since.
For months, neither the former first lady or the former president addressed the rumors, but just recently, Michelle Obama opened up about what it’s like to be in the public eye, shutting down the rumors, and now, admitting that she’s going to therapy. Keep reading for more information.
Michelle Obama Opens Up About Therapy
In April, Michelle was interviewed on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, and opened up about the phase of life she's in. "At this phase of my life, I'm in therapy right now because I'm transitioning, you know?" she began.
"I'm 60 years old. I’ve finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact. I’m an empty nester. My girls are in — you know, they’ve been launched," she continued, speaking of her daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23. "I now don't have the excuse of, 'Well, my kids need this' or 'My husband needs that' or 'The country needs that.'"
"So, I'm getting that tune-up for this next phase because I believe this is a whole 'nother phase in life for me," she finished. "And now I have the wisdom to know—let me go get some coaching while I'm doing it."

Obama Divorce Rumors
Most of the rumors that have been making headlines recently derive from the fact that Michelle has been notably missing from several public appearances her husband made this year. On January 9th, she did not attend President Jimmy Carter's funeral. Days later, she was absent from Donald Trump's inauguration as well. Then again in March, Barack attended a Los Angeles Clippers game without his wife.
Then, of course, there are the Jennifer Aniston affair rumors, which the Friends star herself has shut down on live television. While on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she clarified to fans that she's only met the former president "once."
