You can make mistakes on your phone that lead to battery degradation and limit the lifespan of your device — two things you definitely want to avoid. But, did you know you can also make iPhone charging mistakes that can compromise your hardware? It’s important to use the right chargers for your phone (they should be designed specifically for iPhone and your phone model), and to practice good charging habits.
Here are three things you should avoid doing: three mistakes that tech pros say you should never make because they can compromise your phone’s hardware.

1. Using Cheap Chargers
Using cheap or counterfeit phone chargers often lack proper voltage regulation. This can result in overvoltage or under voltage, both of which can damage your phone battery. These chargers may also lack safety features and increase fire hazard risks and the risk of internal components of your phone failing.
Either purchase chargers directly from Apple or make sure you are using MFI-certified chargers.

2. Charging Your Phone on a Mattress
When possible, avoid falling asleep while charging your device. Although doing so is likely going to be harmless, if your phone ends up trapped under a pillow it can generate heat that contributes to the heat already being generated by your phone on a charger. Always charge your phone on a flat surface in a room-temperature setting.

3. Not Cleaning Your iPhone Port
Lint, debris, and dust gather quickly in an iPhone port. Not cleaning it out periodically can lead to a slower, less efficient charge, overheating (which degrades your battery faster) and damage to the charging port. Prevent these issues by cleaning your charging port every few weeks using compressed air or a wooden or plastic toothpaste (never metal).
