Here's Why Older Women Who Take These 3 Supplements Have 'Fewer Wrinkles' And 'Moisturized Skin'

Can a supplement actually reduce your wrinkles?

According to many experts, yes — but you have to know how to separate the effective supplements from money-grabbing marketing schemes, of which there are many. Oftentimes, the most effective supplements are the ones that are unhyped. They don’t require multi-million dollar marketing budgets because their effectiveness (and the way experts rave about them) speak volumes. If your skincare goals include “fewer wrinkles” and more “moisturized skin,” look no further than these three supplements. These supplements can be found in most health stores and big-chain pharmacies and don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, either.

1. Hyaluronic Acid

You’re probably well aware of the popularity of hyaluronic acid as a top ingredient in many moisturizers and serums, but did you know the naturally occurring substance can also be taken in supplement form? HA, as it is also known, holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water — and this means it’s excellent for helping your skin retain moisture. Regular use of HA can lead to smoother, clearer skin, enhanced skin elasticity, a boost in collagen production, and a stronger skin barrier that can protect your skin from moisture loss and environmental damage.

2. Fish Oil

There are numerous reasons why you should add fish oil to your diet, including that its omega-3 fatty acids support heart health and can help lower your blood pressure. Fish oil is also fantastic for improving cognitive function and providing protection against diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. In terms of how it helps your skin, fish oil reduces inflammation in the body, and this can lessen the occurrence of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. It boost collagen production, fights cell-damaging free radicals, and promotes skin elasticity.

3. Collagen Peptides

There has been some controversy over whether collagen peptides can actually help your skin when taken in supplement form, with many experts explaining that most powders and supplements simply can’t penetrate and be as effective as we’d like. But there are still plenty of experts standing behind collagen (and there are a few studies to back them up). Collagen proteins, which decline with age, are important for keeping skin healthy, tight, and smooth. These powders may boost collagen production, hydrate the skin, thicken the dermis, and improve overall hydration.

Before you begin any new supplement regimen, be sure to check with your physician, especially if you are already taking medications.
