If you’re a smartphone owner who just can’t seem to optimize your battery, there are likely a handful of common mistakes you’re making.

When it comes to keeping an iPhone or Android phone charged and lasting longer throughout the day, there’s a lot more to it than just plugging in your phone here and there. There are actually a few mistakes you might find yourself making that can end up having a significant impact on your smartphone’s battery, particularly when it comes to your settings and charging habits. Read more about two of them below.

1. Not Using Optimized Battery Charging

Whether you use an iPhone or Android, keeping your phone's optimized battery settings turned on can make a noticeable difference in your device's performance and longevity. These built-in features help manage how your battery charges and how apps use power in the background, potentially reducing unnecessary battery drain and helping your battery stay healthier for longer.

"It's not great to keep your phone fully charged at 100%," notes tech pro and store owner Steven Athwal. "Lithium-ion batteries have high voltage when fully charged, which will really push chemical wear, decreasing the battery's ability to store charge. Conversely, allowing the phone to drop all the way to 0% ALSO puts stress on the internal battery. Basically, going from one end to the other wears the battery. Keep your battery between 20-80% and turn on your phone's optimized battery charging feature that delays charging to 100% until it's needed."

2. Using A Low-Quality Charger

Using a cheap or low-quality charger may seem like an easy way to save money, but it could end up costing you more in the long run. Poorly made chargers may deliver inconsistent power, overheat more easily, or put unnecessary strain on your iPhone or Android's battery, which can affect its performance and longevity.

"The use of non-certified or cheap chargers and cables also inflicts permanent damage to smartphones," adds Athwal. "They are unregulated, providing unequal power that causes voltage spikes, and sometimes lacking good heat controls. The battery's charging circuits are then forced to work harder, which produces further heat, accelerates chemical breakdown, and damages the internal structures. Use reputable charger plugs/cables with built-in protections."
