Are you currently dealing with a lagging smartphone and stressed that you might have to get a new one? Turns out, there are some apps you should take a look at first.

When an iPhone or Android starts lagging and running slowly, it can be not only annoying but anxiety-producing as well, given that if you need your phone in an emergency and it’s running slowly, that can be dangerous. Many people automatically assume that they should look into replacing their phone when it lags, but there are some other things worth examining, like the types of apps you have in your library. Read more about two apps experts suggest deleting to speed your device back up below.

1. Large Gaming Apps

Large gaming apps can take up a surprising amount of storage and may also use a lot of processing power, particularly when they're running intense graphics or consistently having you download updates. If your phone is struggling to keep up, having several heavy games installed could contribute to sluggish performance.

"Games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Genshin Impact can take up a huge amount of storage and require a lot of processing power," notes tech and software pro Calvin Brown. "If you haven't played a game recently, delete it—you can always download it again later."

2. Unused Social Media Apps

Social media apps you rarely open may also be worth cleaning out. Even when you're not actively scrolling, some apps can store cached data, download content, or run in the background, taking up storage and resources. Deleting apps you no longer use can help free up space and give your phone a little breathing room.

"Social media apps can become storage hogs," explains tech repair pro James Waterston. "Apps like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok can accumulate a surprising amount of cached data from all the photos and videos you scroll through. If you barely use one of them anymore, delete it — there's no reason to let an abandoned app eat into valuable iPhone storage."
