Queen Camilla And J.K. Rowling Meet In Edinburgh To Discuss Young People Reading
The Queen Consort and the controversial author reportedly met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland at the end of last month (which just so happened to be Pride Month) to discuss encouraging young people to read, and ensuring they have access to books.
The royal family's X and Instagram accounts shared a photo of the two women posing together, alongside the caption: "With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh."
The caption continued: "Her Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations."
While some people thought it was a worthwhile meeting for a good cause, many others slammed Queen Camilla for meeting with Rowling, especially as it took place during Pride Month.
"Absolutely horrible any time, but especially during Pride Month," slammed one Instagram user. "Literacy is great. Transphobia is not. Do better," wrote a second, as a third said: "Trans people's dignity and lives matter. Hosting this giant transphobe shows which side the royal family are on – shame on you."

Why Has J.K. Rowling Come Under Fire?
Rowling has faced significant criticism in recent years over her comments about transgender issues. Many LGBTQ+ advocates, activists, and fans have accused her of promoting transphobic views, while others have defended her, saying she is expressing concerns about sex-based rights and women's spaces.
The controversy dates back several years and intensified after she appeared to support posts criticizing aspects of the transgender rights movement. It later escalated in 2020 when she criticized the use of the phrase "people who menstruate" instead of "women," arguing that biological sex is real and should not be replaced by gender identity. She later published a lengthy essay explaining her views on gender, women's rights, and free speech, insisting that she supports transgender people while rejecting claims that she is transphobic.
In 2023, she captioned a social media photo reading "Repeat after us: Trans women are women" with "No," and said she would "happily do two years — [behind bars] if the alternative is compelled speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex."
Her comments have also sparked criticism from several members of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts casts, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. Watson has publicly said she disagrees with Rowling's views on transgender people, while Rowling has continued to defend her position in essays and social media posts. Rowling has consistently denied being transphobic, saying her views stem from a desire to protect women's rights, single-sex spaces, and children.

Social Media Reactions
Given the ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling, it should come as no surprise that Queen Camilla faced backlash for meeting with the author. "You do realize she has some pretty disgusting views about transgender people?" asked one X user.
"Oh yes, Rowling, a hateful transphobe bigot trying to make life for trans people not only difficult, but dangerous as well, loves a good book," quipped a second, as a third said: "This is in such bad taste."
"The Royal Family standing proudly with probably the biggest trans hate preacher in the world. Shows how out of touch the monarchy is. Tick-tock," concurred a fourth, while a fifth echoed: "The Royal Family should not be posing for photographs with one of the worst trans-baiters in the world today and then posting them on the very platform where she promotes her hate."
"'Deep commitment to children' is hilarious when talking about one of the most hateful bigots of the century who causes unimaginable pain on trans youth," said a sixth, adding: "Having a 'deep commitment' to children shouldn't be something said about somebody who holds conditions on whether a child deserves love or not."
A seventh chimed in: "Haven't you heard? JKR lost her passion for writing a while back, preferring to spend her time & money these days whipping up hate against a minority group – trans people – on Twitter. This just demonstrates how out of touch you are."
