Taylor Swift recently released her highly anticipated record, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), a re-recording of her 2010 album of the same name. On July 7th, she shared this with fans, as well as six new songs “from the vault,” or written when Swift was in her late teenage years and early twenties.

One of these never-before-heard songs, “When Emma Falls in Love,” has sparked rumors that the song is about Swift’s longtime friend, Emma Stone. Fans on Twitter, TikTok and elsewhere are speculating about whether the track is indeed a tribute to Stone and her dating history.

Does Taylor Swift's "When Emma Falls in Love" Pay Homage to Emma Stone?

Some of its notable lyrics include: "When Emma falls in love, she calls up her mom / Jokes about the ways that this one could go wrong / She waits and takes her time, ‘cause little miss sunshine always thinks it's gonna rain."

Many Swifties are pointing out on social media how in one iconic scene in the 2010 film, Easy A, Stone's character sings along to a greeting card that plays Natasha Bedingfield’s hit, "Pocketful of Sunshine."

Need any more convincing evidence? As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Swift and Stone became friends in 2008 after meeting at the Young Hollywood Awards. Two years later in 2010 (the same year Speak Now released), Stone brought Swift with her as a date to the red carpet premiere of Easy A (as seen above).

They've been pals ever since, as Stone recently supported Swift at an Eras Tour concert earlier this spring.

As Elite Daily pointed out, an early 2010s, resurfaced Swift interview recently emerged on TikTok. In it, Swift says that if she could be "one person for a day," she'd choose "Emma Stone." In another verse in "When Emma Falls In Love," Swift sings: "And all the bad boys would be good boys / If they only had a chance to love her / And to tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her."

Around the time that Swift wrote Speak Now and this song, Stone was reportedly dating Succession star Kieran Culkin. The two were romantically linked from 2009 to 2011. On Twitter, some fans think a Swift lyric from this track that mentions a "boy with eyes like a man" is about Culkin.

Others have guessed that this lyric is instead referring to Andrew Garfield, who Stone reportedly dated from 2011 to 2015 (and starred with in the Amazing Spider-Man film series).

While thousands of Swifties are almost certain that this song is about Stone, they still seem to be divided as to which love interest is mentioned in the third verse.

On Twitter, one fan wrote after the track's release: "is when emma falls in love a emma stone/kieran culkin song or a emma/andrew garfield song? inquiring minds need to know."

They added in a follow-up tweet: "i’m almost positive it’s [about] emma stone. there’s even a interview of taylor where they ask if she could be anyone else and said she would be emma stone, which fits these lyrics."

Someone else chimed in: "So is the Taylor Swift/ Emma Stone song about Kieran Culkin or Andrew Garfield? The TL is confusing me." While we may never know, the song certainly has charming lyrics, an infectious melody and a youthful exuberance that really help take us back to one of Swift's most memorable musical eras!
