Processed Meats

Processed meats, like sausage, bacon, and deli meats, can lead to some major signs of aging if you aren't careful.

 

Ariel Ostad, MD, fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, explains to Health, "Many of these meats have sulfites and other preservatives, which can trigger inflammation in the skin, and accelerate the appearance of aging."

Additionally, many of these meats are high in salt, which presents another problem for your skin.

 

Ranella Hirsch, MD, former president of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery, and dermatologist practicing in Massachusetts, told Health about the effect of sodium. She explains, "[S]odium ... can make you retain water and cause a 'puffy' look."

Processed meats are a dangerous addition to any diet and can lead to an array of health problems besides affecting your skin, including chronic health conditions. Eating processed meats is associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and even bowel and stomach cancer.
