As Charlie attempted to reach the par-5 hole in two, he was disrupted by a fan’s phone shutter during his third shot, which ultimately led to a break in his concentration. This caused him to finish the hole with a bogey that ended his chances of advancing in the tournament. Although the young player's tournament ended in disappointment, sports media outlets are reporting that it was still one of his strongest overall performances at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
The 17-year-old rebounded after a difficult opening round to play his way into a playoff for one of the final spots in match play, which some have noted was a significant milestone in his budding junior golf career. As reported by People, Charlie's been working hard to improve his skills over the past several years, earning multiple victories and committing to play collegiate golf at Florida State University in 2027.
While he's making a name for himself, the young golfer has also been strongly influenced by his award-winning dad, Tiger, playing with him since he was a little boy and making public appearances by his side for various championships. Throughout the last decade, his father has given him top-notch coaching, which has reportedly strengthened their relationship and stemmed from Tiger's complex relationship with his father, Earl Woods.
"Tiger loves spending time with Charlie on the golf course, but he has a completely different vibe than Earl had while working with him," a source told the above publication in 2020.
