Health Experts Caution Against These 3 'Toxic' Hair Care Ingredients That May Cause Fallout And Even Cancer

Haircare products promise shinier, stronger, more nourished strands—and many of them really do deliver thanks to ingredients that hydrate, protect, and restore. A great shampoo, conditioner, or styling product can make all the difference in how your hair looks and feels, while also supporting scalp health and overall strength. With so many impressive formulas on the market, it’s easy to assume every bottle is filled with nothing but goodness for your hair.

But not all ingredients are as healthy as they seem. Some common additives in haircare can be drying, irritating, or even linked to more serious health concerns. If you’ve noticed increased shedding, breakage, or scalp irritation, it might be worth looking at the labels on your go-to products. At best, these questionable ingredients can worsen thinning and dryness; at worst, certain ones have been tied to potentially toxic effects, including cancer. Here are three haircare ingredients experts warn against so you know what to watch out for.

formaldehyde

1. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is sometimes found in certain hair-smoothing treatments and can be released from preservatives in shampoos and conditioners. It’s a known human carcinogen, which means it has been directly linked to cancer risks with prolonged exposure. On top of that, formaldehyde can irritate the scalp, weaken follicles, and contribute to increased shedding, leaving hair more fragile and vulnerable over time.

parabens

2. Parabens

Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in many beauty and haircare products, and have raised concerns because they can mimic estrogen in the body. This hormonal disruption has been linked to possible cancer risks, particularly breast cancer, as well as potential impacts on scalp health. For some people, parabens may also trigger irritation and dryness, which can exacerbate hair thinning and fallout.

phthalate

3. Phthalates

Phthalates are often added to products to help fragrances last longer, but they come with significant health warnings. These chemicals are considered endocrine disruptors, which means they can interfere with hormones in the body and potentially contribute to reproductive issues and certain cancers. Beyond these risks, phthalates can irritate the scalp and weaken the natural structure of hair, leading to brittleness and shedding over time.
