We’re always looking for the next best thing to add to our skincare routine, especially when it comes to products that can give more youthful, glowy results. By now you’ve probably heard a ton about the big acids in skincare: alpha hydroxy acid is amazing at exfoliating dead skin cells, salicylic acid is preferred for banishing acne-causing bacteria, while hyaluronic acid is your go-to ingredient when you crave intense moisture and hydration. But those aren’t the only acids on the block. We spoke with beauty experts about the unexpected acid dermatologists say you should be using every morning over 50 for younger looking skin and — surprise — it’s not retinol or vitamin C.

Succinic Acid

It’s new to the skincare scene and it’s not your typical AHA or BHA, according to Nurse Practitioner Maegan Griffin, founder of Skin Pharm, but succinic acid is making waves and is about to blow up as the latest and greatest acid to add to your skincare routine.

“Not only is succinic acid hydrating like hyaluronic acid, it’s also an anti-microbial, which specifically helps decrease the activity of p.acnes bacteria,” Griffin explains. “Succinic acid is more gentle than other acne treatments, like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, making it a great alternative for those with sensitive skin. It’s also an up-and-coming ingredient for anti-aging. Succinic acid has been shown to slow collagen degradation, increase cellular renewal and increase mitochondrial activity in the skin cells, leading to overall revitalized and healthier-looking skin. This acid is safe to use for all skin types and safe to use with other actives, like retinoids and Vitamin C.”

According to Griffin, historically, the downside to using succinic acid has been that it was expensive and came from nonrenewable resources, such as amber and petroleum. But all of that may be changing as the demand for this ingredient increases. “With new scientific research, the industry has found more sustainable ways to source natural succinic acid, bringing its cost down and making it more accessible to use,” Griffin says.

If you’re eager to try succinic acid, one product you can start with is The INKEY List Succinic Acid Acne Treatment, which is sold at Sephora and (the cherry on top) costs less than $10.
