Thinning hair is a common concern many people face, as there are many factors that can contribute to breakage or fallout. For many of us, this can simply be the result of something that a medical professional can address, such as genetic factors or nutrition. However, there are just as many habits or haircare mistakes you could be making that can contribute to fallout.

In fact, even washing your hair could lead to fallout – if you’re making certain mistakes.

According to Dr. Nava Greenfield of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, washing your hair to harshly can cause fallout or breakage. She explains that you should be careful about pulling at your hair too roughly while you shampoo.

"Any repetitive pulling or tugging at hair with a harsh comb or brush can cause a traction alopecia with hair loss," Dr. Greenfield says. "In general, be gentle with your hair and scalp to ensure the follicles are not experiencing any trauma which will stunt their growth."

Once you get your shampooing technique down, the next step is to make sure you're using the right ingredients in your hair. Dr. Greenfield also notes that certain chemicals could contribute to thinning hair - even ingredients that don't seem harsh may be of concern.

She tells us, "If there is an ingredient that causes an allergic reaction in a patient that reaction may cause some loss of hair as part of the inflammatory reaction. Some chemicals that may not be well tolerated are sodium Lauryl sulfate or amonium lauryl sulfate. Polyethylene glycols and formaldehyde’s can also potentially cause reactions. Harsh chemicals commonly found in perms can cause hair loss."
