With grocery store scams popping up left and right these days (on top of overcharging), it’s always good for stores like Walmart to take action and work to correct the issues rather than turning a blind eye. However, when the superstore froze nearly $4 million’s worth of gift cards in attempt to stop fraud, many innocent shoppers lost money in the process.

Luckily, The United States Department of Justice has officially ordered Walmart to repay those customers. Read on for more information about who qualifies for these payments and how to receive yours.

Walmart ordered to repay customers after freezing gift cards

So, how did all of this start, anyway? Top Class Actions reports that the Walmart gift card scams date back to 2015, when fraudsters would pose as family members, government officials, or business and convince people to purchase $500-$1,000 gift cards for them.

In response to this issue, Walmart began freezing gift cards within this price range between April 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017. Now, the Department of Justice has ordered the superstore to repay a total of $3,958,060.84 in remission payments to customers.

If you had a Walmart gift card balance frozen during this timeframe (April 1, 2016-July 31, 2017), you are eligible to receive a payment equal to the amount of the gift chard. However, if you already received a payment from your bank as reimbursement, your remission payment will be reduced.  >Tech Experts Say You Should Never Fall For This One Common Scam–It’s So Dangerous!

First, it's crucial that you have documentation proving you purchased the gift card(s). Once you have that ready to go, you can submit a request from.

The deadline to submit a form is July 14, 2023.

It should be noted that you should not to submit a claim if you are not eligible for remission payment. As Top Class Actions notes, this would be a fraudulent claim and would harm eligible customers. If you're unsure whether or not you're eligible, carefully read the FAQ.

Finally, in addition to getting your money back, it's important to remember to be vigilant against fraudsters and stay aware of the scams out there.
