When applied correctly, eyeshadow can make your eyes pop and can even create a more youthful appearance. However, when eyeshadow is applied incorrectly, it can backfire and cause you to look old and tired.

Applying eyeshadow is kind of an art; it takes a lot of practice to create a masterpiece! Here are 5 common eyeshadow mistakes to look out for when applying makeup, so you don’t look…well, you know, older:

1. Not Using A Primer

Not using a primer before applying makeup might be the biggest eyeshadow mistake there is! Primer preps and smooths out your skin, prevents creasing and caking, and it makes your eyeshadow stay in place for hours!

"Be sure to let primer dry first with your eyes closed for a few seconds before proceeding with the eyeshadow," says makeup artist Min Min Ma.

We love Too Faced's Shadow Insurance primer; it's lightweight, waterproof, and will keep your eyeshadow from creasing!

2. Using Too Much Product

When you have a nice eyeshadow palette with multiple shades, it's easy to go overboard on the amount of product you're using. Always start with a little bit of product and then apply more if needed.

“The best part about makeup is that when you start with a little you can always add more,” says Joey Maalouf, co-founder of The Glam App.

3. Using The Wrong Brushes

The brushes you use to apply your eyeshadow are just as important as the eyeshadow itself. Investing in a good set of eyeshadow brushes will help you apply and blend your eyeshadow to perfection. No more Q-tips!

We recommend starting off with this double-sided contour brush by Kat Von D. The tapered side is used to sweep on eyeshadow precisely, while the light side helps to blend.

4. Not Applying Eyeshadow To Your Bottom Lid

Many people neglect their bottom lash line, creating an incomplete look. Use the eyeshadow you use on the main portion of your eyelids and apply a light sweep to your bottom lash line. This will really make your eyes pop!

5. Not Highlighting Your Inner Corners

Highlighter isn't just for cheekbones! Applying a bit of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes can create a brightening effect. This trick will also help your eyes look bigger--and who doesn't want that?!
