If you’re charging your phone and still facing the next afternoon with a dwindling battery, there’s a good chance you’re doing something wrong. But what on Earth could you possibly be doing wrong — shouldn’t it be as easy as plugging in your device and letting it power up? Actually, no. There are charging errors you could be making that seem insignificant, but add up to less battery power. Tech experts say this is the worst mistake you can make when charging your phone.

Charging Your Phone Overnight

Although there is still some debate over this one, Jordan Figueredo, a tech expert at MobileQubes, says charging your phone overnight is never the best idea for your battery.

“Charging your iPhone overnight is one of the worst things you can do to your battery,” Figueredo says. “This action will overload your battery and ultimately chips away at your battery’s life span.”

“Your phone has a lithium-ion battery that functions at its best when kept at a consistent charge between 40 and 80 percent, so by overcharging your phone the battery will be unnecessarily taxed and will not only shorten its lifespan but can rise to a temperature that can threaten your safety,” Figueredo says. “If you want to be able to use your iPhone longer, it’s best to unplug your phone from the charger when it’s completed.”

In addition to being mindful of when you charge your phone, Steve Scott, CTO at Spreadsheet Planet, reminds us that it’s equally important to use only quality chargers.

“Apple accessories are, without a doubt, expensive — Cheaper, off-brand chargers, on the other hand, can cause damage to your iPhone,” Scott says. “I suggest avoiding knockoff or counterfeit hardware as much as possible. Get yourself an Apple or MFi product. You don't have to go first-party, but something that hasn't been accepted by Apple's MFi program should be avoided. When it comes to wireless chargers, be extremely vigilant. Wireless chargers that are knockoffs are bad for the life of your battery. Invest in high-quality ones or simply avoid them.”
