Our smartphones contain, pretty much, our entire lives. From the contacts we store to personal messages and location info, anyone who picks up our iPhone at random is able to access a staggering amount of personal information about us. Taking steps to secure your phone prevents sensitive info from getting out into the world and ensures that your data is saved in a safe place where you can access it. Digital Marketing Strategist Adil Advani at PureVPN spoke with SHEFinds.com about the worst mistake you can make with your iPhone in 2020 — and how to correct it.

What would happen if you lost your phone today, or, worse, if it was stolen? Would you immediately lose access to an unfathomable amount of information and data that you had stored on your device? If the answer is “yes,” you are neglecting to do one important thing that will save all of that important information, as well as allow you to delete it from your iPhone.

The worst mistake iPhone users make, according to Advani, is not considering how simple it is to lose all of that data you’ve acquired on your phone. “The worst mistake is failing to back it up,” Advani says. “You never know when disaster will strike and you won’t have access to your phone. Your iPhone could be stolen, lost, or damaged. And when you replace it with a new one, you won't have access to the data.”

There are a few ways that you can back up your iPhone so that your information is safe and secure — and where you need it when you need it. The most popular methods are backing up to iCloud or backing up to your Mac or PC.

To back up with iCloud, connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, go to settings, and tap iCloud. Tap iCloud Backup and then tap Back Up Now. Keep your Wi-Fi connection going until the backup is complete.

You can also back up your files and data to your computer. To do this connect your device to your computer. If you’re on a Mac, open Finder. If you’re on a PC, open iTunes. Locate your device on your computer and click Back Up Now.

That’s how simple it is to back up files and have them stored for easy access, just in case. Just remember to back up your phone often. Once your files are backed up, you can safely delete them from your phone — just in case.
