There are a lot of misconceptions out there when it comes to using foundation when you have mature skin that shows signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Some tips will have you believe that the less makeup you wear, the better — and there’s some truth to the fact that certain makeup can accentuate lines in your skin and settle in your pores.
But that’s where a few good foundation hacks and tips come in handy. When applied adequately and skillfully, foundation can create a smooth base that brings out your natural beauty and, well, looks pretty natural. Here are some makeup artist-approved ways to make foundation look amazing on mature skin.
Exfoliate
A great makeup look always starts with good skincare. It’s important to exfoliate a few times a week to remove dead and dry skin cells so that your foundation doesn’t sit on top of dry skin. Applying moisturizer and sunscreen (if you are leaving the house) is also important to add hydration, protect from UV rays, but also to “plump” up your skin so that it looks its best and is ready and primed for your makeup steps.
Use a Primer
Makeup artists can’t stress this point enough: it is so important to use primer prior to foundation. A silicone-based primer sits atop the skin and provides a barrier between your pores and your foundation. This help decrease the chances of your foundation settling into fine lines and wrinkles.
Use Foundation for Mature Skin
There are so many different foundation types on the market, so we can understand how confusing it is to choose one for your skin type and needs. But here’s a great tip: when you have mature skin, make sure you read the ingredients in your foundation and choose formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, sunflower seed oil, grapeseed oil, vitamin E, and other ingredients that add moisture back into your skin. Mature skin can be dry and some foundations only serve to dry skin out more, so looking for the right, hydrating ingredients is key.
Change How You Apply Foundation
Applying too much foundation is a no-no because it can look cakey and settle into lines. A better approach is to apply foundation or concealer only when you need it — around the nose, under the eyes, and wherever you have discoloration. Make sure you blend well with your fingers or a damp makeup sponge.
Set Your Makeup With Powder And/Or Setting Spray
Applying foundation isn’t your last face makeup set — it’s so important to seal it with a translucent or pressed powder and/or setting spray. This last step prevents your makeup from caking or sliding around on your skin and it helps it last for hours. It also helps it not settle into pores and fine lines.
There’s no reason to fear foundation. Changing up how you approach this product and apply it can make all of the difference.
