How To Choose A Tunic That Flatters Your Figure

Tunic tops are an absolute closet essential. They look good with leggings, skinny jeans and trousers and can be worn almost everywhere. Even better, there’s a flattering option for just about every body type. Find the perfect pick for you below.

If you’re pear shaped…

If your body is pear-shaped, which means you hold more weight in your hips and rear and have slimmer shoulders, look for a tunic that has side vents. This will help keep it from clinging to your thighs and your bottom. It should fall either above or below your widest area, which is just under your waist, so as not to draw too much attention to it. Your tunic should have a wide neck in order to broaden your shoulders. Adding a chunky necklace will also help balance out your body.

If you have an apple shape…

Women with apple-shaped bodies have wide torsos, broad shoulders, and relatively more weight in their bust, upper back and waist, with thinner arms, legs and hips. For this reason, a V-neck tunic that directs the focus up and towards your face is most flattering. A short necklace and earrings will also help in that department. Tunics that are long and/or clingy, on the other hand, are not great choices. In terms of color and print, small patterns and dark shades are your best bet.

If you have an hourglass figure…

Fitted tunics are great options for women with the signature small waist and curvy hips and breasts of an hourglass figure. If you prefer a looser tunic, looping a belt around your middle will still accentuate the slimmest part of your body. Avoid tunics with ruffles, ruching or other details near your neck. They run the risk of making your upper body appear larger than it really is, especially in relation to the rest of your body.

If you have a full figure…

If your figure has an overall full shape, it’s important to find a tunic that’s sized appropriately. This means it’s not too clingy, not too loose, and has a bit of shape to it. In other words, skip anything that even slightly resembles a tent. Look for something that shows off your wrists and collar bones and has a small print or vertical stripes for effective all-over slimming.

If you’re petite…

Tunics can be hard for people with petite figures, as they’re often much longer than appropriate. Either choose one that’s shorter than most (or have your shortened by a tailor), or wear a longer one as a dress. Skip details like empire waists and puffy sleeves–both of these things can give off a look that’s too reminiscent of a little girl.
