Introducing extreme temperatures to your phone, whether that’s extreme heat or cold, can cause the battery to degrade faster and throttle your phone’s performance, leading it to becoming sluggish and slow.
According to Apple, the ideal temperature to keep your iPhone for usage is 0° to 35°C (32° to 95°F). If you plan on storing your phone, the temperature is slightly different: -20° to 45°C (-4° to 113°F) for storage. Basically, it’s a good idea to try and maintain room temperature settings for your phone.
This becomes even more important when you are charging your device. You’re already adding heat to your battery via the charging process, so paying close attention to your setting and to how you’re charging (your charging habits) will matter a great deal. Here are three charging mistakes that could be overheating your device and shortening the lifespan of your phone.
1. Exposing Your Phone to Heat
This habit is probably the easiest one to break: don’t charge your phone in an area that is hotter than room temperature or located in direct sunlight. This means avoiding places like your car console on a sunny day, a hot room, or even charging your phone while it’s on your bed, where it can get trapped beneath a blanket or pillow.

2. Using Cheap Chargers
You take a risk when you use cheap charging cables on your iPhone. Unless the cables are designed for your phone model and battery charging needs, they may charge too fast — and this can cause your phone to overheat. Always buy cables that are Apple-certified (even if you don’t buy Apple cables) to prevent this from happening.

3. Letting Your Battery Drop to 0 Percent
Repeatedly allowing your battery to drop to 0 percent taxes your phone and its battery more than if you had charged it sooner. It takes additional phone resources to boost that battery power back up after your phone has died. A better solution is to keep your eye on your phone’s battery. When it reaches 20 percent, set it to Low Power Mode. Then find a charger as soon as possible and give it a boost to keep your battery within 30 to 80 percent charged.
