A great haircut can lift you out of a funk, make you feel like a brand new version of yourself, and emphasize certain features on your face that a one-layer, long style can’t always do. Whether you’re ready to chop it all off or would rather go with something that isn’t so dramatic but still gets the point across that you’re in the mood to shake things up a bit, Rosalba Mancuso, a professional hairstylist from wigreports.com, recommends her top favorite five angled hairstyles that many women turn to for a more modern look. Age is nothing more than a number and these trendy and up-to-date hair styles keep you looking your best at any age.

Basic Undercut

A basic undercut is a classic hairstyle that features one side of the head shaved while the other remains untouched, Mancuso explains. “One of the benefits of a basic undercut is that it can help create a younger, fresher look,” Mancuso says. “There are many different variations for basic undercut that focus on making it more modern. For instance, you can choose to add in some shaved sides with a high-and-tight hairstyle.”

If your stylist needs a better explanation of how to achieve this look, Mancuso provides steps: The first step for this haircut is to shave one side of the head down to at least a quarter-inch below the bottom of the ear,” Mancuso says. “It's important not to go any shorter because there isn't enough hair to clip in place, and it will fall over onto your face during your day-to-day activities. The second step for a basic undercut is to taper the hair on top; you can shear off or brush out this length up until two inches from your scalp line. This leaves plenty of room for your fingers to be able to grab and mold the hair while it's being clipped in place. You can use a basic undercut as your basic hairstyle, or you can choose to change things up a bit based on your mood; for instance, there's nothing that says that every day of the week has to be basic with no added styling details.”

Shaggy, Choppy Layered Bob

This one is cut in steps, using a scissor over comb technique, where you first add a blend of lengths between two-inch extended blending with up to six-inch short pieces to create texture in the shorn length, according to Mancuso. Some people opt for a basic undercut with a taper around the front hairline. “The basic bob is cut below the chin and styled with a round brush to give it body,” Mancuso says. “Hair can be layered through the bottom half of your hair for maximum volume. The [bob] hairstyle is suitable for all hair types, but an inverted bob will work better with thick hair, and a basic shaggy bob style will suit thin straight hair.”

Asymmetric Bob With A Side Bang

“The asymmetric cut and the side bang are a youthful, casual look,” Mancuso says. “This style is perfect for hair that's curled in soft waves and styled from top to bottom.” After getting this cut at your salon, Mancuso recommends using texturized and wax products to add some height to hair, as well as a curling iron if you want to more volume.

Medium Length Messy Lob

Not ready or willing to chop your hair to your chin? That’s where the beauty of the lob comes in — it makes you look stylized and fresh without losing as much length as a traditional bob. Use volumizer or texturizing sprays to create a slightly undone look that is modern and fun.

Angled Chin-Length Layered Bob

“This cut gives you a youthful appearance by giving the face a more ‘open’ shape, similar to that of a young person,” Mancuso says. To both cut and style this look, Mancuso provides these steps:

Step 1 - Brush hair out of the face and apply a heat protectant cream to the hair.

Step 2 - Trim hair above shoulder length with scissors, gently holding on to the bulk of the hair near the neck with your non-dominant hand.

Step 3 - Cut a few inches below the chin vertically at an angle and begin to layer hair from eye-level down in 1-inch increments until you have reached the desired bob length.

Step 4 - Finish with a texturizing product and blow dry for the optimal desired effect.
