Barack and Michelle Obama recently looked back at some of the former first lady’s most memorable fashion moments, with the former president revealing one of his all-time favorite looks.
During their conversation for InStyle‘s Behind the Seams, Barack admitted he isn’t a fashion expert—but he knows what he likes.
“I don’t know that much about fashion, but I know what looks good,” he joked before singling out Michelle’s outfit at the 2012 Democratic National Convention as one of his favorites.

“She looked very cute, and it showed off her legs a little bit,” Barack said with a smile. “I liked it.”
Michelle seemed surprised by the confession, replying, “I didn’t know that. You liked that dress?”
“Beautiful,” Barack responded.
For the occasion back in 2012, the mom of two wore a custom sleeveless pink-and-copper shift dress by acclaimed American designer Tracy Reese. The silk jacquard dress featured an abstract pattern and was paired with J.Crew’s Everly suede pumps in the shade Rhubarb, along with a blue-gray manicure that completed the polished look.
The nostalgic conversation comes shortly after the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, where many of Michelle’s most iconic fashion moments are now on display. Located on a 19.3-acre campus in Chicago’s Jackson Park, the center officially opened to the public on June 19, 2026, following a dedication ceremony.
The four-level museum features interactive exhibits, White House memorabilia, a replica of the Oval Office, and the Sky Room, while also showcasing several of Michelle’s most memorable outfits from her years as First Lady.

Michelle Obama Displays Outfits She Wore As First Lady At The Obama Presidential Center Exhibit
Ahead of the center’s debut, the former First Lady launched a social media series that explored both her signature style and the initiatives she championed during her years as First Lady alongside Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.
The series began with two videos, including one titled Beauty Belongs to Everyone, in which Obama reflected on several dresses and gowns now featured in a museum exhibit dedicated to her White House years. In the video, she explained that every outfit she wore was chosen with intention and purpose.
"I learned early on that the clothes I wore in the White House would never be seen as just clothes," she said. "I had to be very intentional. With the help of my talented team, I considered every choice—the designer, the color, the silhouette, the style—before I set foot in public."
The mom of two explained that she viewed fashion as an opportunity to tell a larger story about representation and inclusivity. "I thought about who I wanted to lift up, who I wanted to see reflected in what I wore, and what story I wanted to tell about who I am and who we are," she said.
She went on to describe the exhibit as more than a showcase of clothing.
"The pieces you'll see at the Obama Presidential Center Museum tell part of that story," Obama shared. "It's a story of style, but it's also a story of purpose, confidence, and how no one gets to prescribe what it means to feel beautiful. We get to choose that for ourselves."
