Here's Why Experts Warn Against Charging Your Phone While You’re Asleep

Most of us don’t think twice about how we charge our phones — we plug them in whenever it’s convenient and go about our day (or night). But the truth is, certain charging habits can quietly take a toll on your phone’s battery health over time. From using the wrong type of charger to letting your battery drain too low too often, the way you power up your device can make a big difference in how long that battery holds up in the long run.

One of the most common questions people ask is whether it’s okay to leave your phone plugged in overnight. It’s convenient, sure — but is it safe for your battery? Interestingly, experts are a bit divided on this one. Some say it’s harmless with today’s smarter batteries, while others warn it can still have long-term effects. Here’s what many tech pros have to say about the habit.

Reasons Not to Charge Overnight

Many tech experts advise against charging your phone overnight for one main reason: prolonged charging can put unnecessary stress on your battery. Most modern smartphones are designed to stop charging once they reach 100 percent, but if your phone remains plugged in for hours, it may slowly drain a little and then top itself back up repeatedly throughout the night. This “trickle charging” can gradually wear down the battery’s lifespan over time, especially if it happens night after night. Overheating is another concern if your phone is tucked under a pillow or blanket while charging because it can trap heat and potentially damage internal components.

Another reason some experts are cautious about overnight charging is that people often use low-quality or non-certified chargers while they sleep, which can be riskier in terms of safety and battery health. Some third-party cables or charging bricks don’t regulate power properly, which can lead to voltage issues or even overheating. So while charging overnight itself isn’t necessarily dangerous with a good-quality charger and proper airflow, it’s the combination of factors that may put your battery over the edge over time.

Why You Don’t Have to Worry Too Much

Although some experts say it isn’t the best habit you can have, charging your phone while you sleep isn’t the worst thing you can do — and many people find it hard to avoid (it’s just so darn convenient). If you’re using a certified charger and placing your phone in a well-ventilated spot (aka not under a blanket), it’s generally safe and unlikely to cause major harm. What’s actually worse is letting your battery frequently drain down to 0% before recharging or using uncertified charging cables. If charging overnight works best for your routine, just be mindful of your setup and habits.
