Charging your phone overnight while you sleep is one of those habits that just makes sense, since it’s convenient, fits perfectly into your routine, and ensures you wake up to a fully powered device. Most of us plug in without thinking twice, placing our phones on the nightstand or even under our pillows. But despite how common this habit is, it’s also sparked a lot of debate among tech experts about whether it’s actually good for your phone or even safe.

So, what’s the real deal? Is charging overnight harmless, or could it be slowly damaging your battery over time? And is it actually safe to sleep with your phone right next to your head? Here’s what you need to know so you can decide whether it’s a habit worth keeping or changing.

Be Cautious About Charging On Your Bed

While it may seem harmless, charging your phone right next to you—especially on your bed or under your pillow—can pose real safety risks. Phones generate heat while charging, and when airflow is restricted by soft bedding, that heat can build up quickly. In rare but serious cases, this has led to phones overheating, batteries swelling, or even catching fire. It’s not just about faulty chargers either; even official chargers and devices can malfunction under the right (or wrong) conditions.

Electrical safety is also a concern. If you are using cheap or counterfeit charging cables and adapters, they often lack proper safety features and can spark or short-circuit. If you’re asleep and the phone is charging inches from your face or body, you may not be able to react in time if something goes wrong. For added peace of mind, experts recommend using only certified charging accessories and placing your phone on a bedside table or other safe surface rather than in bed with you. It's a small change in charging habits that can reduce your risk.
