Donald and Melania Trump left the White House in January 2021 to make way for the Biden administration. Since then, the pair have taken a break from the spotlight to spend more time at their private Palm Beach club, Mar-A-Lago.
Even so, they’ve managed to crop up in the news and stir some controversy. In part, that’s because sources close to the former first couple are sharing secrets about their time in the Oval Office. One such insider is Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, who recently spoke to Insider about the ex-President’s takeover of the Republican party. Among the revelations, Cohen also spilled a bombshell about Melania-keep reading to find out what it is!
During her time on the campaign trail in 2016, Melania Trump seemed like the perfect politician's wife, supporting her husband at public appearances and giving speeches on his behalf. But behind closed doors, things were a different story.
That's because Melania didn't believe her husband would win the election! "Melania played a very limited role during the campaign not believing Donald would actually win," Cohen told Insider. "However, when directly asked for her opinion on a matter by Donald, she offered it readily."
Despite not believing her husband would defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump readily agreed with some of his more controversial opinions, like the fact Trump didn't believe the late Senator John McCain to be a war hero.
According to Politico, Trump criticized McCain in 2015 while he was on the campaign trail in Iowa. "He's not a war hero," Trump said. "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
This sentiment was echoed by Melania, former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told Insider.
"We flew from Iowa back to New Jersey, and this guy Dave picked us up in the car, and we drove over to Mr. Trump's house," Lewandowski revealed. "As we walked in the door, Mrs. Trump was waiting for us. She said: 'You're right. John McCain isn't a war hero. What he has done for the veterans has been shameful.'"
But representatives for Melania were quick to debunk Lewandowski's recollection of the day, stating that the the info he'd shared with Politico was "inaccurate."
"This story is inaccurate. Mrs. Trump respects and values all service men and women who have served and are currently serving our great Nation," her office said in an emailed statement.
