President Donald Trump is facing intense backlash after making comments at a campaign rally that appeared to suggest Iran could “take out” two massive and popular cities in California.
During a recent speech in Nebraska, the president spoke about economic costs associated with the ongoing conflict with Iran and went viral online after making comments about the country being allowed to ‘take out’ San Diego and Los Angeles. It didn’t take long for a massive wave of backlash to kick in, and while the White House later insisted his words were being misinterpreted, the comments have not at all been taken lightly. Read more about what he said and how the internet reacted below.
Trump Says Iran Could ‘Take Out’ Los Angeles And San Diego During Nebraska Rally
The Apprentice star made the controversial remarks while speaking at a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on October 5th. As he discussed higher prices linked to the conflict with Iran, the president argued that economic sacrifices were worth it for national security.
“It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,” he said. “They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.”
The remarks drew immediate criticism from California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, who wrote on social media that Trump was “deranged and dangerous.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the statements “dangerous,” while San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria pushed back by declaring, “San Diego is not collateral damage. We are not expendable.”

Social Media Users Slam Trump For His Comments
As expected, it didn't take long for the president's words to go viral on social media platforms, where users from across the country and worldwide weighed in on them. Since the speech was made, the White House has attempted to defend his statements, claiming that Trump will 'protect' American cities from conflict, but it hasn't been enough to stop users from expressing their 'disgust' and outrage.
"Never in my life would I have thought the President of the United States would suggest A foreign country to take out cities," responded an X user. "What are we doing?"
"He should be in prison for saying that. Killing Americans...treason," commented another.
One user wrote, "An American President said it's fine for a foreign country to kill approximately 5.3 million Americans in LA and SD because those two cities are located in a state that he lost."
"Every decent American should be disgusted by this animal," they continued.
"Joke or no joke, this shows his division of this country," a user added. "He has no intention of being president of the United States of America. He's just insecure."
"No president should ever think this about an American city, much less say it out loud," wrote another, with one user adding, "The orange buffoon is a traitor. Here is Donald Trump openly advocating for our enemies to murder millions of Americans."
