Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife, Bettina Anderson, are addressing reports that a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin paid for lavish celebrations surrounding their Bahamas wedding earlier this year.

According to an investigation by ProPublica, Russian businessman Umar Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses connected to the wedding festivities, including the rental of a private island where guests stayed and a reception was held. Kremlev is described by ProPublica as being close to Putin and serves as president of the International Boxing Association.

The wedding weekend took place across multiple days and private islands in the Bahamas in May. While Trump Jr. previously described the ceremony as a small affair, photos shared by Anderson showed a much larger celebration featuring entertainment, fireworks and other festivities.

Trump Jr. and Anderson have not disputed Kremlev’s role in paying for the celebrations. Instead, Anderson described his contribution as an exceptionally generous wedding present.

“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us after our wedding,” Anderson wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.

“It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” she added.

The couple also pushed back against suggestions that Kremlev’s involvement had a political dimension.

“Friendship doesn’t require a political motive,” they said, adding that “generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.”

A spokesperson for Trump Jr. similarly described Kremlev as a personal friend and said the two men do not have a business relationship. According to the spokesperson, they met through a mutual friend in the hunting world and bonded over their shared interests in boxing and outdoor activities.

Kremlev’s representatives have also characterized the relationship as a friendship. His press office told ProPublica that Kremlev and Trump Jr. have a “friendly relationship” and said Kremlev has not discussed political matters with Trump Jr. or his other American acquaintances.

The details surrounding the wedding have drawn attention in part because of Kremlev’s reported relationship with Putin. ProPublica reported that Kremlev had traveled with Putin to China shortly before the wedding and that several other Russian guests attended the Bahamas celebration.

The wedding itself was held on May 22 and was described as an intimate ceremony with family. The larger celebrations continued afterward, including events on May 23 and May 24. ProPublica reported that Kremlev paid for the rental of a neighboring private island used for the final reception, where Trump Jr. and Anderson had their first dance.

President Donald Trump: 'I Have No Idea Who Umar Is'

President Donald Trump did not attend his son's wedding or the celebrations that followed.

After ProPublica's report was published, Trump said he had never heard of Kremlev and disputed the characterization that the Russian businessman paid for his son's wedding.

“I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day from the wedding,” Trump said in a statement. “It was an ‘afterparty’ given in their honor. Not a big deal!”

The issue has also prompted scrutiny because Trump Jr. has substantial personal wealth. ProPublica noted that Forbes recently estimated his net worth at approximately $300M.

The revelations have since prompted a congressional inquiry. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, requested records concerning Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev and the payments made by foreign nationals for the wedding celebrations.

Garcia said the arrangement raises what he described as “serious national security and public corruption concerns.”

Neither the reported payment nor the friendship between Trump Jr. and Kremlev, however, establishes that the wedding gift had a political purpose.

Trump Jr. and Anderson have explicitly characterized it as a personal gift from a friend, while Kremlev’s representatives have denied that political matters were discussed between the two men.

On social media, users were outraged as they expressed their reactions.

“GRIFTERS,” wrote person on Instagram.

Another said, “I mean they aren’t even hiding the relationships anymore. It’s right in our faces. How in the world is this ok?”

Someone else commented, “The corruption is getting louder and louder. MIDTERMS PEOPLE.”

One person said, “No one gives a 'gift' like that and doesn’t want something in return.”
