Many were shocked when Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic-Socialist, beat out former governor Andrew Cuomo for New York’s Democratic mayoral primary. But everyone was shocked when Donald Trump started threatening him. Donald Trump Threatens Zohran Mamdani
During a press event at the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention site in Florida, Trump responded to Zohran's assurance that he would block ICE raids in New York City: "Well, then we'll have to arrest him," Trump said. "We don't need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I'm going to be watching over him very carefully." In a separate interview with Fox News, Trump warned that if Mamdani wins and doesn't "do the right thing," NYC could see reduced federal funding.
Mamdani then responded to Trump's comments on X, formerly Twitter, saying, "The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported… His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation."

"But a felon is allowed to be president?" another person asked. "Trump should follow his own words. He's the criminal."
