Critics Slam Erika Kirk For Using Her Kids As 'Political & Emotional' Props In 'Bizarre' Photoshoot For New Magazine Cover: 'Totally Inappropriate'

One year after the death of Charlie Kirk, his widow, Erika Kirk, is opening up about grief, motherhood, and her new role leading Turning Point USA in a new Vanity Fair profile. However, the magazine’s cover and accompanying photos have sparked strong reactions online, with some viewers calling the imagery “bizarre” and unsettling.

The September 2026 Vanity Fair digital cover story, titled “The Widow’s Peak,” places the mom of two in a carefully staged domestic setting that incorporates elements of motherhood, mourning, and patriotism.

In one of the main images, the 37-year-old is pictured sitting on a couch in a lived-in room surrounded by children’s toys. Her daughter sits on her lap with her face turned away and hidden from the camera while wearing a hat commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. She is also dressed in a red-and-white gingham outfit, adding another distinctly patriotic element to the scene.

Erika Kirk Slammed For Using Her Kids As 'Props' In New Cover

A bronze bust of Charlie appears in the background, while a piece of paper displayed on the wall reads “31 ways to live like Charlie Kirk,” a reference to his age at the time of his death.

The unusual composition quickly became a topic of discussion online, with some social-media users criticizing what they viewed as the use of children and symbolic objects to create an emotional or political message.

“Well if this isn’t using your kid as a prop then I don’t know what is. How bizarre and gross tbh,” one person wrote on Reddit.

“100% her idea to use her own children as little mannequins for her photo shoot,” another claimed.

“The vibes are CREEPY. I understand not wanting to show the kids but the way this was done is like some haunted house [expletive],” a third person said.

Another commenter wrote, “The first photo gives me chills and not the good kind. Scary.”

“It gives the impression of someone who would use their children to shield them, both metaphorically and literally,” another person wrote.

“These are so bizarre,” someone else added, while another criticized the images as “so weird, using her children as props.”

One X user took issue with what they perceived as the emotional framing of the photos, writing, “It is objectively wrong and totally inappropriate to use your child as a political and emotional prop like this. Imagine what she was told to do… ‘Think about your father being murdered and cry in my arms... while somebody takes our pictures, so they can be published online.’”

Erika Leads Turning Point USA After Charlie's Death

The reactions come as Erika has stepped into a prominent leadership role following Charlie’s death.

Charlie, the founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The organization marked the one-year anniversary of his death in September 2026.

Erika was appointed CEO and board chair of Turning Point USA following her husband’s death and remains in those positions. The organization currently lists her as CEO and chair on its official team page.

Since taking over, Erika has continued to publicly promote Charlie’s legacy while leading the organization’s events and initiatives. In 2026, she has also appeared on Turning Point USA’s nationwide campus tour.

The Vanity Fair feature offers a more personal look at Erika’s life following her husband’s death, but the striking visual presentation has become a story of its own online, with viewers divided over the family imagery, patriotic symbols, and reminders of Charlie’s legacy in the shoot.
