Is there anyone who doesn’t have a love-hate relationship with eyeliner? Use it well and you’ve created the perfect feline flick to open up your eyes and add intrigue to your look. But one wrong move — or one cough or sneeze — and it’s smudge city. There’s no need to be afraid of or intimidated by eyeliner. Whether you prefer a pencil or gel pen, this is one makeup tool that has the power to give your eyes a starring role in your look, create mystery, or make you look more awake and refreshed — depending on your makeup goals that day. Beauty Expert Adina Mahalli at Maple Holistics weighed in to suggest one life-changing eyeliner hack that can instantly make you look 10 years younger — and it doesn’t require the skills of a pro makeup artist to achieve.

White Eyeliner

It’s not what you think. Yes, nineties fashion is back in a big way, but glittery white eyeliner placed on the lid is not included in that rush of retro trends. So, why does Mahalli say she recommends bright white eyeliner anyway? Simple: it helps make the face appear more youth. The trick though is knowing exactly where to place it.

“Applying white eyeliner to the lower waterline can help make the eyes appear bigger and brighter,” Mahalli says. “This trick is great for aging skin and makes you look more awake in general. A simple white eyeliner can be purchased at most drugstores or even high-end makeup stores. Depending on your budget, you can find the best product that suits your needs.”

One common misconception that Mahalli says she encounters is the idea that black eyeliner is universally flattering. “This is actually not true as black eyeliner can actually create a darker illusion and cause your face to look tired,” Mahalli.

This holds especially true for the placement of black eyeliner on the lower waterline or rimmed around the top and bottom lids of your eyes. If you are a black eyeliner devotee but want a more wide-awake look, using it sparingly on the top lid (or top waterline) and even creating a small wing at the side of your lid can bring forth the drama without creating shadows that can make you look more drawn.

If you notice your white eyeliner seeps onto your bottom lashes or you aren’t in love with how bright it appears, an alternate eye-opening trick is to swap white for nude eyeliner and use it the same way — along your bottom waterline. But don’t toss that white liner out just yet. Add a touch of white liner to the corners of your eyes for an instant brightener.
