Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez deservedly took home the trophy for ‘Generation Award’ at the MTV Movie & TV Awards (an accolade that celebrates “beloved actors whose diverse contributions to both film and television have turned them into household names”). In her speech, Lopez unsurprisingly thanked her family, children and fiancé Ben Affleck for their support throughout her career, but also had a few words to say to her “haters” or those who didn’t believe in her dreams or what we all now know she is capable of artistically. Wow!

In her speech, JLo, 52, said, “Since you cannot create truth unless you’ve really lived it, I have a different kind of list of thank-yous tonight.” She continued, “I want to thank all the people who gave me this life. I want to thank the people who gave me joy and the ones who broke my heart, the ones who were true and the ones who lied to me. I want to thank true love and I want to thank the way that I lied to myself because that’s how I knew that I had to grow. I want to thank disappointment and failure for teaching me to be strong, and my children for teaching me to love.”
Lopez, who has starred in iconic films like Selena, The Wedding Planner and more recently, Hustlers and Second Act might be receiving acclaim for her acting talents now, but she assured fans in her speech that it wasn’t always this way. “I want to thank all the people who told me to my face or when I wasn’t in the room that I couldn’t do this,” she said. The singer and dancer (and overall triple threat) then went on to acknowledge her many admirers. “I know I couldn’t have done it without the fans who saw the movies. You are the reason that I am here and that I have been here and I love you.”

The “If You Had My Love” hitmaker inspired millions of people who took to Twitter soon after to share their thoughts. “Beautiful speech!!” wrote one fan while another added, “I can’t think of any other actor more deserving right now.” Others began to speculate about who Lopez was referring to when she noted those who “lied” to her.
“Could this be about A-Rod?” wrote one fan. Baseball legend Alex Rodriguez and Lopez were together for 4 years and rumors of trust issues circulated after their split (since anonymous sources speaking to outlets like People and E! reportedly indicated that she “didn’t fully trust him.”

Regardless, we have to agree with another fan who wrote, “no matter what, JLo’s speech is truly touching and motivating to anyone who hears it,” and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves! This also wasn’t Lopez’s only win of the night—she also received a Best Song trophy for her single “On My Way” that was featured in her February 2022 rom-com Marry Me.
