You probably have dozens of passwords to remember for various websites and apps. It can get so difficult to create new, complex passwords for every one of the sites you visit (using a password manager can definitely help). Unfortunately, hackers are on standby just waiting for you to make some of the most common password mistakes. It’s important that you stop making this one mistake — you have a lot to lose if things go wrong. Your personal information, including banking and credit card numbers, can fall into the wrong hands. Here’s the common password mistake that hackers love — and how to stay safe.

Reusing Passwords for Different Websites

Even though it’s difficult to create unique passwords for every site you frequent, it’s necessary. If you use the same password for several or all sites, the minute that password falls into the wrong hands, they’ll be able to access information from every other website, too.

If you can’t fathom making up passwords, use Password Manager, which comes up with intricate and complex passwords that are far more difficult for hackers to figure out than your dog’s name and a few random numbers.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

In addition to never reusing passwords and creating more complex ones, it’s a solid idea to enable two-factor authentication for any site that allows it. This requires that you put in your complex password as well as a code sent to your phone or email.

You may even want to consider doing away with numerical passwords altogether and using biometrics so that your phone reads your fingerprint or uses facial recognition to give you access to your device. This step makes it even more difficult for hackers to access your phone and its data.
