If you’re wondering where Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton‘s relationship stands today, you’re definitely not alone. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly), it does not sound like a close sisterly relationship is in the cards for the duo. An Us Weekly source recently revealed that they have not communicated “directly in over a year.”
Keep reading for more details.
Their relationship resembles their husbands'
According to the source, the distant relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William has made it difficult for Markle and Middleton to connect. "They were never that close, but the reason they’re not speaking is because of the rift between Prince Harry and Prince William," the insider explained.
"Harry and William have communicated sparingly over the last year, but none of their communications have been friendly in quite some time," the source continued. "There is real animosity that the brothers have toward one another, and that has spilled over to Meghan and Kate’s relationship, making it very hard for them to be friends or even friendly."
They have a history of rumored tension
Markle touched on her relationship with Middleton during their recent tell-all-interview, specifically clarifying the tabloid rumors that she had made her sister-in-law cry in the days leading up to the royal wedding. According to Markle, the opposite is actually true.
"A few days before the wedding, [Kate] was upset about something—yes, the issue was correct, about the flower girl dresses—and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings," Markle told Oprah Winfrey. "And I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else is doing, which was trying to be supportive knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot."
There is no residual bad blood from that situation though. Markle emphasized that Middleton had apologized with a note and flowers and that Markle had forgiven her.
She added, "If you love me, you don’t have to hate [Middleton], and if you love her, you don’t have to hate me."
The Us Weekly source seemed to touch on this amicable but decidedly not close relationship. "In the beginning of their relationship, Kate and Meghan did get along," the insider explained. However, "they didn’t see eye-to-eye when it came to day-to-day life in the palace."
Kate "wishes she knew more" about Meghan's challenging adjustment
That being said, the source did let slip that Middleton "wishes she knew more" about Markle's difficulties adjusting to life as a member of the Royal Family. This same sentiment was echoed in Buckingham Palace's official statement concerning the Oprah interview: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan."
Here's hoping they are able to work out their differences soon and get to a better place together!
