According to HuffPost, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace explained the decision: "Having considered all the appropriate advice, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor."

Part of the reasoning behind this decision was to avoid creating any crowds, which the royal family typically attracts, especially when attending church on Christmas Day.

This is not the only royal holiday tradition that is up for change this year.

According to the Daily Mail, the Queen will also be skipping her annual staff gifting ceremony.

The article explains that usually "[t]he Queen personally hands over her token of appreciation to a small selection of staff by the Christmas trees at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle as a special thank you for their loyal service, before she de-camps to Sandringham until February."

However, this year, the event has been canceled in order to stick to social distancing guidelines and protect the Queen's health.

The article explains that the Queen is currently in a "strict operational bubble."
