The only thing scarier than getting hacked is the idea that your device could already be hacked and you don’t even know about it. Hacking happens to the best of us. Preventative measures like using 2-factor authentication and creating the most complex passwords you can is your best line of defense, but it’s also important to know the signs to look out for should a hacking take place — so that you can take immediate steps to resolve the situation. This is the scary way to tell if your Apple account has been hacked, according to tech experts.

Signs your account has been hacked

There are several signs that may suggest your Apple account has been hacked. “One is that you may suddenly start receiving notifications about account changes that you didn’t make, such as password changes or adding new devices,” said John Nakata, chief technical specialist at IBR.  “Another sign is that you may find that your account has been used to purchase items you didn’t authorize, or that your iCloud storage has been used up more quickly than usual.”

Another sign of a hacked Apple account is the receipt of strange or unfamiliar emails or text messages, said Umar Farooq, technology expert at Laptopar.com “Hackers may use your account to send spam or phishing messages to your contacts, or they may try to trick you into giving them sensitive information,” Farooq said. “If you receive messages from unknown senders that seem suspicious, it’s best to avoid clicking on any links or providing any personal information.”

If you experience any of these signs, Nakata stresses that it’s important to take action right away and change your password and other account information.

What should you do if you think your Apple account has been hacked?

If you think your Apple account has been hacked, the first thing you should do is change your password, Nakata advised. “You should also update your security questions and answers, and make sure you have two-factor authentication enabled,” Nakata said. “You should also check your iCloud and App Store settings to make sure no unauthorized purchases have been made. If there are, you’ll need to contact Apple support to get your money refunded.”

The more familiar you are with the signs of a hacking and the faster your response, the better equipped you’ll be to protect your data.
